How to grow bare root Astilbe

Astilbes are the epitome of garden elegance, with their billowy blooms and beautiful foliage. In this video, I'm excited to show you how to plant bare root Astilbe, ensuring your shady garden spots are adorned with these stunning plants.

Step 1: Selecting Bare Roots

Before diving into the planting process, it's crucial to acquire high-quality bare root Astilbe. Look for roots that are firm and healthy, free from any signs of decay or damage. Opt for reputable suppliers or nurseries to ensure the best start for your Astilbe.

Step 2: Preparing the Planting Site

Astilbes thrive in shady areas, making them ideal for creating lush corners in your garden. Choose a spot with partial to full shade, ensuring they receive the filtered sunlight they crave. Prepare the soil by ensuring it is moist, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. Astilbes prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of approximately 5.5 to 7.0, so amend the soil accordingly if needed.

Step 3: Planting Process

Once you've selected the perfect spot and prepared the soil, it's time to plant your bare root Astilbe. Follow these steps for optimal growth:

  • Dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the bare root, ensuring the crown sits just below the soil surface.

  • Gently spread the roots in the hole, taking care not to damage them.

  • Backfill the hole with soil, pressing gently to remove air pockets and secure the plant in place.

  • Water thoroughly to settle the soil and provide essential hydration to your newly planted Astilbe.

Step 4: Care and Maintenance

After planting, continue to provide consistent moisture to your Astilbe, especially during dry spells. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds. As your Astilbe grows, consider dividing overcrowded clumps every few years to maintain vigor and promote healthy growth.

With their love for shade and penchant for elegance, Astilbes are the perfect addition to any garden. By following these steps for planting bare root Astilbe, you'll ensure a thriving display of fluffy flowers and lush foliage in your shady garden spots.
